iiiMemo(ayayay-mĕm'ə)
Last week I was helping out on a training at Albany, NY (or Smallbany, as my good friend Paul calls it).
The trainer (Brian Smith, my hat goes off to him) had a cool Ice Breaker prepared that I would like to share here.
To me, an Ice breaker is something more than simply a fun start for meetings or training sessions. It helps with team integration, and it might send a wonderful message:
We are more than workers and coworkers. We are persons, and we can be friends. Let’s really get to know each other.
And this Ice-breaker pretty much nails it:
The 5 C´s: Car, Color, Cuisine, Character, Career
In a blank sheet, each participant will answer the following questions:
-Car:
If you could own and drive any car in the world (any year, model, style, brand, no matter the cost of ownership, gas, taxes or maintenance)... what car would it be?
You can include cars of famous people, movies, antiques, prototypes, etc.
-Color:
What color would it be?
-Cuisine:
If you could eat absolutely any dish, no matter the cost no matter the calories, where and what would it be?
-Character:
If you could meet and have an intimate conversation, with any person, dead or alive, who would it be? He can be famous, a relative, an historic character. The only restriction is that is not a cartoon. Jesus, Buddha, and other religious characters are considered valid, as well as legends as Aquilles and Robin Hood.
-Career:
If you could work at anything you’d like (imagining money is not an issue, nor limitations as family, aptitude nor education), what would it be?
So, once everybody writes their answers in the sheets, they will pass them on to the facilitator. Every once in a while during the session, maybe after coming back from lunch or a break, the facilitator randomly chooses one of the sheets and reads the answers.
The participants will try now to guess who is the author.
Obviously, the answers will provide you a great insight about your team. You will be surprised and intrigued about some of the answers!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

"Whenever two people meet, there are really six people present.
There's each man as he sees himself, each man as the other person sees him, and each man as he really is"
~ William James
For Cuisine, it was fairly easy to me.
Grated Lobster in Baja California.
For ideal Career I’d probably go with designing Video games.
Or designing games at Disneyland.
For Car, I’d probably go (for now) with the Nissan Leaf: 100% green car that seats 5 and reaches 85 mph.
I know... it is not as exciting as a Porsche, a Viper or a Ferrari, but breaking dependency on petroleum is a top point for me.
